At a quick glance, theres one there offering $25.98ph & another part time offering $27, they would be considered high paying & you can bet there will be stiff competition for those positions!

Where as the money maybe more in Sydney or Melbourne , the cost of living and the general expense of just existing would blow him away , 

 

A large rural city where he is still entitled to the state awards as far as pay goes , and the cost of living is less IMO would be a better option for him,

 

Just our weekly food bill in Aus for a family of 4 is $400 + . I need to earn better than 2k a week to survive here..

A couple can live comfortably in Australia on around $12000 a year PLUS housing.  Groceries are dirt cheap in Australia but accommodation is insane.  Yeah he could survive adequately on $30k but it wouldn't be a good deal unless accommodation was included.

Well we all have different definitions of comfort i guess!

I was making around your stated amount of $12000pa when i was an apprentice living with my mummy rent & bill free & was still broke every week.

This doesn't answer your question about compensation; however, going forward, an additional dose of scepticism should be applied to any application for employment in Australia due to the recent changes in temporary employment visas, if that is the route being offered.  The way Australia is heading, I would look for all visa classes to be tightened similarly:

Summary: 

 

From 19 November 2016, the period that a primary Subclass 457 visa holder can remain in Australia after their employment ceases will be reduced from 90 days to 60 days.

 

This change will apply to primary Subclass 457 visas granted on, or after, 19 November 2016.

 

DIBP have advised that the purpose of this proposed change is to strengthen the integrity of the Subclass 457 visa programme and ensure it meets its intent of acting as a supplement to, rather than a substitute for, Australian workers.

 

Changes to Temporary Activity Visa Framework

 

With a view to simplify the temporary activity visa framework, the following changes will come into effect on 19 November 2016:

 

·         Repeal of five visas - Temporary Work (Long Stay Activity) (Subclass 401); Training and Research (Subclass 402); Special Program (Subclass 416); Temporary Work (Entertainment) (Subclass 420) and Superyacht Crew (Subclass 488);

·         Restructuring of two existing visas - Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) (Subclass 400) and Temporary Work (International Relations) (Subclass 403);

·         Creation of two new visas - Temporary Activity (Subclass 408) and Training (Subclass 407); and

·        Six existing sponsor classes replaced - Long Stay Activity, Training and Research, Professional Development, Entertainment, Special Program and Superyacht Crew sponsor classes will be replaced by a single Temporary Activities sponsor class.

 

There will be four visa subclasses:

 

·         Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) (Subclass 400) visa;

·         Temporary Work (International Relations) (Subclass 403) visa;

·         Training (Subclass 407) visa; and

·         Temporary Activity (Subclass 408) visa.

 

Please also note this little change:

 

Rules for Dependents

 

Currently, children or stepchildren aged 18 years or over can be considered as a member of the family unit and therefore included in the main applicant’s visa application if they are wholly or substantially financially dependent on the main applicant for their basic living costs. Other family members, such as parents, could also be included in the main applicant’s visa application on this basis.

 

From 19 November 2016, children and stepchildren aged 23 years and over will no longer be eligible to be included as dependents unless they are physically incapacitated for work. Other family members, such as parents will also no longer be eligible to be included as dependents. The changes do not impact Humanitarian, Protection or Refugee visas.

 

There will be some exemptions for certain temporary dependant visa holders who are submitting a subsequent related visa application.

 

From 19 November 2016, affected dependents will have to apply for a separate visa to enter Australia.
