Washitsu / Raised flooring?

29 posts in this topic

Any of you guys tried this in your Philippines homes?

Basically it's raised flooring and you just sit on the ground/carpet, with coffee table and no bed frame etc. No heavy furniture or tall cabinets.

Nowadays people don't live like this anymore. But the Washitsu room still exists and usually reserved for kids' playroom. So perhaps some of you built it too?

The flooring is usually raised by 40 or 50cm, and can be open from above or side for storage:

I'm thinking of getting one as well, make the design and send it to the carpenter... in Taiwan they always mention water-proof works which seem troublesome? I'll be paving it on top of existing laminate floor so maybe there'd be no such issue? Just make many boxes and put them together to make the flooring I guess.

Have you considered the possibility of just moving into a place and settling in with what is there? Kinda like a hotel room?

It won't be furnished. I'll need a bed frame (30k), night tables (10k), tv stand (10k), sofa (30k) etc for a start, not including any decorations yet...

If I choose an Washitsu I'd only need a mattress and coffee table. The rest are blankets and sit-mats which cost little. And it'd probably look very spacious!

I had problem sitting like Japanese though...

Half the PI sleeps and sits on the bamboo floor with only a sheet for a mattress, so it should work ok.

just leave 4 slots open in floor around table, they U can sit normal, just don't for get to close at night.

Wouldn't work for me____I would need a winch in the ceiling to hoist my fat ass off the floor.

if you have to stand and sit down on floor dozens of times a day you cannot be fat!

I have lived in washitsu most of my life. It wont work here well for a number of reasons:

You must have sliding doors if you sleep on the floor to prevent draughts.

There are far too many bugs to do it here.

You put futon style bed on tatami. Sandwiches of woven rice straw around two inches thick. This makes sleeping ok as it still adds flexibility underneath you. Otherwise lying on the floor would be tantamount to punishment. I like a hard bed but not that hard.

You cant just leave a bed on the floor like that. You would need to lift it every day to air the mattress other wise it would stink.

The only advantage of living on the floor is its cooler down there.
