Hi,

As mentioned before, im going to Cebu, and i'll be island hopping Philippines.

I find Cebu city a difficult place to get around, and get lost regularly.

Anyway, ideally I would be able to get a Sat Nav for Cebu City, and even better would be the entire Philippines, including detailed Cebu City.

Is anything like this available ??

Any help would be much appreciated, as this would be a hugh help to me, as it means a bit of independance !!

Thanks
Smidsy

You can download a GPS map of The Phillipines from http://roadguide.ph and upload to your GPS device. Cebu City is quite detailed. Many of the main roads throughout the island chain are mapped. Garmin-compatible, only.

Here are some files PiRider (Bryan) uploaded some time ago. Maybe they can help?

http://www.cebulivin...nes_navigation/

Also, search the forums, because there has been a fair amount of information posted here about that very topic.

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify, I dont own a Sat Nav yet, so If I buy here or there, im easy.

So can I just walk into a shop and buy a Sat Nav with the maps preloaded ?

Ayala or SM no? Is the equipment available, but maps are rubish, or both are just unavailable(except the links above-Thanks!) ?

In that case, should I buy here, and bring it with me? Then sort out the maps myself ?

If so,

There's one here im looking at http://www.halfords....tegoryId_212513

Is it what I need ? I dont want to waste money on detailed maps of Europe, when I should be buying more techy equipment with my money. Or perhaps they are all good for my purposes, and I should just be buying the cheapest(80 euro) ?

If so, im glad I asked before I left !

Also, to Admin.

I assumed there would be loads of threads, and I searched the following...

Sat Nav
GPS
Satellite Navidation

I didnt receive any hits(well, 1 but unrelated), but when I googled it, I got some results from this site with posts from 2007. Iv no idea why !

Possibly the search isnt working right, or only includes recent threads ? I used the quick search.

carNAVi GPS Navigation

All our new navigation systems are preloaded with a very detailed and actual map covering the whole Philippines (see examples) with more than 150.000km roads in an area of over 6.5 million sq km. In additon all units will have a worldwide basemap with major highways and country boarders.

Included with these map are more than 30 thousand Points of Interests (e. g. Restaurants, Shopping, Fuel Stations, ATM’s, Hotels, Hospitals, Drugstores etc).

Each units comes with street search, city search and POI search function and do automatic Routing with voice prompted direction commands to your destination.

You can store your own position marker (POI), enter geografic coordinates i.e. for geocaching and for mapmaking the units are equipped with a track-log function. This makes it possible to view the logged data i.e. in Google Maps or OpenStreetMap.

Beside the navigation functions each new unit has unique multimedia functions, like a build in MP3 player, a MP4 video player and a photo viewer. Optionally available is also a build in Bluetooth Handsfree Kit, so that you can make your phone calls in the car safely without handling your mobile phone.

<h2 class="title">How much details can I see?</h2> Admin on May 10th 2008

The first question always, “is my street in the map?“, and “how detailed is this system?

Since there are no official GPS referenced road data available in the country, we try our very best to steadily continue the development on the maps.

Regularly map updates will be available for download and we would even like to ask our users to contribute their data like new POI etc.

Here in the Philippines cities have so many subdivisions and gates, that of course it can happen, that the Navi sends you to such a closed gate. We are working on detailing and correcting such data and try to update our maps regularly to support you with this burden. Same problem results from almost daily changing u-turns. But also in such situation, just to know, where you exactly are in the moment and to see a map of the sourounding, is a wonderful help during driving in the city.

See how perfect the actual map looks already on our new carNAVi devices:

Lets go back to the details, best if we just show you some pictures of a life navi situation in Makati. This pictures were taken directly from the actual navigation unit, this are NOT simulations:

Posted ImageMakati City in 300m scale

Posted ImageFrom a <200m scale on all POI's are displayed

Posted ImageReally easy to find your destination in 80m scale

The system offers 2D view and 3D view, see here an example of a guided route in 3D view in Quezon City:

Posted ImageRoute guidance on Commonwealth Ave., Quezon City, Philippines

To prevent blending of the driver the display can be switched manually or automatically to night view:

Posted ImageFollowing a guided route at night

Also the map is covering not only Metro Mania, see some examples all over the country:

Posted ImagecarNAVi 2009, GPS map view of Camaligan, South Luzon

Posted ImageDavao City, Mindanao, Philippines

Posted ImageVisayas overview on carNAVi 2009 GPS

Posted ImageBacolod, all areas include topographic data like rivers, mountains etc.

This was just a small example how the maps are looking, the sceenshots above are made on a unit with 4.3″ wide screen, we offer also smaller units with 3.5″ screen. More information you can get in our shop.

Want to learn more about how to navigate? There’s an article here which explains how to enter a steet name or search for POI’s, means Points of Interests like gasoline stations or restaurants.

Bloody hell they are expensive !! :D

They are half the price here, with the whole of Europe on them !

Is this your online shop ??

How much are they in the stores, like SM / Ayala?

Ill have to rethink buying there if thats what they cost, probably best to get one here, and make do with the downloadable maps.

I experimented with that, just to see.

When you go to http://www.garmin.com.ph/

Then click on the 205, click buy now.

then you get the following...

www.manilaforwarder.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for *.powweb.com.

I wont be buying there anyway,

Regarding Google, I give the spiders full access to the forums, with the exception of hidden forums. So, they will index and archive all of the forums on this site, which are viewable by guests and full members.

I experimented with that, just to see.

I wont be buying there anyway,

Until recently, I owned a Garmin eTrex Legend, with all the accessories I could buy for it at the time. A friend in Mindanao wanted it, I hadn't used it in a while, so I sold it to him. Anyway, it was great on the motorcycle, via a specific mount, or to just lay on the dash of the car.

I am looking for another one, but want a higher end model this time.

You searched for: GPS
Unfortunately your search didn't return any results.

Remember to use the wildcard '*' to increase the number of matches. Apple* will match 'apple' and 'apples'.

I thought I was searching the wrong forum, or maybe it was case senstitive, but whatever I try, im getting the same.

Im not complaining, just thought I should explain.

Thanks, Iv no problem with the Garmins, I dont know anything about them to be honest, but they seem fine.

It was off topic, but my problem is that that particular website was possibly fake, I got the warning symbol, that usually only comes up when there is a genuine fake site(at least in my experience). The worrying thing, is it only comes up at the beginning of the payment process.

Anyway, what im trying to confirm, is if they are actually available to purchase in the malls of Cebu, with detailed Cebu city maps?

And how much, if they are way over the 10k mark, ill buy here and make do with the downloadable user created maps.

I seen one on ebay for 10k, still high, but not as crazy as the above figures.

I see. I wasn't paying close enough attention to the URL in your previous post. Here is the URL I use: http://www.garmin.com

I personally don't know. I guess you can download maps into your GPS after you get it though, if you want.

I had similar advice offered to me, but I didn't want to wait for the auction to end, etc. So, if you have time, you could probably get a better deal off eBay.
