I think they get round it by claiming it's donated or charity or something, obviously they do get round it because its quite a big business.

Until someone gets pissed off, like a designer label distributor. Since importing used clothing is illegal, it can and does occasionally get confiscated.

its a huge business here.   I think 75% of the people here buy 2nd hand clothes.. (cant blame them).    running a UKAy UKAY is like any business worthwhile..  Very hard and most likely will fail.    However if you stick to it.. learn to buy low. sell slightly higher.. keep an eagle eye on  unmarked inventory.. have a good location, and Personally run the  business everyday..greet all customers.. provide regular monthly specials..clearance.. Advertise new arrivals.. Iron all clothes and hang them orderly..  YOU JUST MIGHT  have a business.   ---- We studied it----  and decided we didn't have enough committed labor personnel--mgt would be thinly spread--inventory would be hard to track---and we didnt want to worry about dealing with that level of clientel --- the ones that always want utang.

Thank you everyone for all the useful information, I am passing it on and they still seem determined.  It'll be s family thing so no shortage of labour.

They're now looking for a shop to rent, I've told them location location location.  There's a new row of little shops going up near me that might be a possibility, I've looked around the area and can't find any other similar shops but still plenty of locals about.  Now they need to talk to whoever owns the development.

I used to incorporate companies for people. I would always ask them - if more money is needed who of you is going to put it in ? If the company goes down who of you is going to bear the loss?

It was amazing how many people had never discussed those questions among themselves, and after they did how many decided not to proceed ! hehe

I hope she has a tight grip on the family,  otherwise stock will go missing,  and or the money.

How would you document your inventory, and know if some were missing?

They open the bail here, and all gather around picking thru the pile for bargains.
