LinC members like Lee and Skywalker have "been there and done that" - and their "boots on the ground" experience and advice are invaluable.

topcat72m shows that he is from Ireland, therefore I do not know if what works for me would work for him, we write a US dollar check and deposit it into our US dollar account, the check usually takes 21 business days to clear but I have had managers of banks we have done business with (in the past), clear our check within 10 business days, they can do it if they wish to and if the main branch will let them do it, our check cleared our US bank within days, so surely it has to be easy for them to make the money available sooner, if they wish to.

Another way may be a little more dangerous, bring a bunch of it in cash, I had traveled with US $10,000 in the past and by using a chunk of that to open accounts, it seemed to open doors for us at banks, YMMV but most banks want money, thus they will very often do what they have to in order to get deposits and especially when they feel a depositor will become a good client, we always tell them our plans and that we will need additional accounts such as checking, savings, etc.

People inspire you or they drain you, pick them wisely.

Do not regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many.

#3 on the Customs declaration form asks if you are carrying in excess of US $10,000

Thus you can carry as much as you wish if you declare it and not have to declare $10,000 or under.

I was pulled aside by customs on the way to MNL after Yolanda and told they noticed I was going to MNL, did I have more than 10K. I said no and they said have a nice flight with no search. Were they sophisticated enough to figure people might be helping their families bringing cash to do so?
