CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna (UPDATE) – Eight alleged members of a robbery-holdup gang were killed in a shootout after ramming through a police checkpoint in Candelaria town, Quezon province early Monday.

Senior Superintendent Francis Elmo Sarona, Quezon police director, identified four of the eight suspects as Roger Baylon of Cainta, Rizal; Jojo Salazar of Magsaysay, Quezon City; Samuel Lunico of Rosario, Albay; and Gilbert Mauricio of Las Pinas City.

Sarona said the suspects were onboard a Toyota Hi-Ace van on Maharlika Highway when they were flagged down at a checkpoint in Barangay Bukal Sur, Candelaria at 5:15 a.m.

Instead of stopping, the suspects rammed the checkpoint’s barricade, triggering a running gunbattle. Police said the suspects were neutralized upon reaching the second checkpoint that was installed a few meters away.

Police recovered one Carbine rifle, a 9-MM pistol, three caliber 45 pistols, a caliber 38 revolver, an M-203 grenade launcher and bank checks amounting to P800,000.00 from the suspects' vehicle.

Sarona said he received an intelligence report that the suspects were planning to rob a business establishment in Lucena.

The Land Transportation Office, meanwhile, said the vehicle could be stolen since its plate number (ZDM-912) was fake.

Authorities have yet to determine the affiliation of the gunmen.

I just watched a tv show on how tens of thousands of Americans die each year from auto accidents. Sounds like I'm safer here as there is only an average of 24 kidnappings per year in the whole country.

I say hats off to the cops on this one. They ran the checkpoint and had a grenade launcher, plus a bunch of guns and stolen bank checks. I'd prefer this than my wife calling the cops for help and then having the cops rip my wifes clothes off and leave her naked in the jail cell for 6 hours.

How about you robert? Which would you prefer, the cops gunning down 8 grenade launcher carrying robbers or your wife be stripped naked by 2 men and 2 woman and left naked in her cell for 6 hours after she called for help?

yea your right there are no accidents here...but then the US has 200,000,000 cars on the road and the philippines has like 9,000,000 so your comparing auto accidents to kidnapping .. hummmm

One difference in the police brutality situations is that when it happens in the US, there is a good chance the police will not get away with it. Here in the Philippines, the police would never be punished for brutal acts. The other main difference is that when the police in the US do something wrong, it is news and everyone knows about it and is outraged. When it happens in the RP, people just shrug their shoulders and say 'what did you expect, its the police'.

well as you asked me which I would prefer my wife to be one of the 8 dead suspected robbery suspects or the naked suicidal women ... hummm naked or dead ... naked or dead... well I pick my wife to be naked in a cell then her brains seeping out on the street how about you which one do you pick for your wife or GF…. I understand they are bad guys and I have to admit the way its handled sure saves money on trials and all that bull… but then last time this happened they accidentally shot a father and his daughter,, well it was not an accident they thought the father was driving a get away car and lets face it a M-16 on fully auto is just not that reliable in hitting what you think every time..
